Loggerheads General Manager James Boatwright Departs for Peoria Chiefs

Oak Island, N.C. — September 1, 2026 — Oak Island Loggerheads General Manager James Boatwright is stepping down to become Director of Corporate Partnerships with the Peoria Chiefs.

Boatwright leaves behind a program that grew substantially under his direction. The Loggerheads housed 32 players with local host families this season and doubled their volunteer and intern staff year over year, while building a presence through the local chamber of commerce and community events across Brunswick County.

That community focus was on display in the team's final game of the season, when the Loggerheads played a slow-pitch softball game against local first responders.

"I'm most proud of the community we've built in Oak Island," Boatwright said. "I think the ties the Loggerheads want to build in this community were evident in that last game against the local heroes here. I'm proud of how our team rallied around that idea, and how the community embraced it."

Boatwright also credited the volunteers and staff who supported the program.

"I want to thank my amazing volunteers who helped me accomplish the impossible — Karen and Skip Platt, Heather and Phillip Kinlaw, my interns, and of course the Allred family for entrusting me with their team."

He leaves with the team positioned to compete for its first ONSL title.

"The team has shown it's on the brink of a championship," he said. "I believe the momentum to bring an ONSL championship to Oak Island is there, and I fully trust that I'm leaving the organization still heading toward that path."

"He came in with some amazing ideas and this organization is in a far better place because of it. We're going to miss him, but we could not be prouder of what he's accomplished here or of where he's headed. That a general manager from Oak Island is moving on to a role like this says a great deal about our league, our team, and this community."
